With no point of reference for a life of "normalcy," seeking acceptance and security in a country not accommodating to immigrants, the author relied only on survival instincts, leading to her years of co-dependency, self-doubt, and utter despondency. She finds herself seeking refuge in controlling religious factions and abusive relationships.

This life struggle reminds her constantly of her experiences in WWII where she spent her first six years on the front lines in Russia and as a refugee in Hitler's Germany. Her lullabies were the sounds of gunfire and exploding bombs. Her arrival at Ellis Island was promised to be the beginning of freedom; instead, it was only the continuation of abuse and control—intimate and personal relationships of psychological warfare.

What a gripping account of ones life. Born in Europe, endured WWII in Europe, subsequently moved to the United States. This story is one you just don't want to put down as things are always developing in the life of the main character. Many of the situations are commonplace in other people's lives, but you are pulled into the story as it developers and you just want to see how things work out. After reading the book, you will want to reflect on some of incidents in the story and ponder how you can, should, would respond in similar situations. This is a study in human responses if you care to reflect on what you have read. There are some serious issues here to ponder. After reading the story, I reflected on situations in my life that I innocently responded in an inappropriate manner. There were some lessons here to be learned by me.

The Chocolate Bar eBook Agathe von Kampen Steve William Laible Reviews

When you meet someone new in your life you never know where the road will take you. After reading Aggie's first book "When the was is Over" in manuscript form, I just knew it had to reach as many people as possible and we made it happen. Now with the new and edited version "The Chocolate Bar", I think this title will invite more people to its pages. From the moment you open the book until the last paged is turned you will be captivated with the journey Aggie's life was. I am proud to call her a friend and a mom.....
I first was introduced to Agathe von Kampens writing by a friend who told me I just had to buy this book "I would love it." So based on that recommendation I set out to purchase "When The War Is Over". When I picked up the book I thought ok here goes, not one to be easily swayed, I will read anything yes even the phone book I set myself up for some high expectations. Not only were these expectations met they were well surpassed. Much to my surprise and delight I finished this book in 3 days I found myself so intrigued by the wide range of emotions I felt reading it that I couldn't put it down. From her rebellious childhood to her hiding in a cave I felt as if I was right there right now.I laughed with her ,cried with her and somehow I could relate to her. Flash forward to "the chocolate bar" This same friend caught me the other day and said hey did you see there is a new book? You really should get it called "the chocolate bar" it is so much better than the first. Well guess what I plan on buying yep. can't imagine not having this book it is really that good.
Born in 1935 in Ukraine, under Stalin and then Hitler's rule, Agathe shares her own very personal and tragic life,
which continued for many years while still living under the manipulative control of others. And yet, Agathe has
emerged triumphant, now receiving and sharing the love of God. I think she has great strength and courage; she
has survived and shared her story with the world.
I liked the book I found it captivating! I was addicted; I could not stop myself from reading it! It got my heart racing and I was so lost in this story. I just couldn't stop thinking about it, what was going to happen and what would happen next! I was looking for a good read and I found one!!

I actually enjoyed this more than I thought. The author didn't go with the standard sort of story. They added plot twist and details. Engaging with enough twists and shadows to keep from being predictable. I would recommend it to a friend.
I thought this would be a book about interesting journey. Instead, the writer talks more about her relationship with her mother.
Incisive, very poignant, heartfelt. Small eyes watching the horror of the era, a tender heart wondering why it is happening. A child becoming an adult, no teenage years allowed. And yet this child survives, and eventually finds happiness, even chocolate.
I first read this book under the title "When the War is Over" - and was moved to tears. How one person could endure such horrors in life, and yet live day to day as if there were nothing out of the ordinary - working, parenting -- is a true mystery. What's more, the writer has shown such strength in her life, not only in character but also physically. I can attest to so much of what she went through, as I am not only her biggest and most ardent fan, but also her daughter. After reading her book -- I can only wonder how she was able to be such a caring mother, and friend to others.
